FORENSICS 2017-2018

WHAT IS FORENSICS?
Forensics is a fun extra-curricular activity offered at St Jude’s under the direction of a parent coach for students in grades 6, 7, and 8. The purpose of middle school forensics is to build self-confidence and oral competency by developing and practicing fundamental public speaking skills.

WHAT DO THEY DO AT FORENSICS?
SJS team members prepare an oral presentation from one of eighteen different categories including Prose, Poetry, Storytelling, News Reporting, Solo Acting and Group Acting, Group Improvisation, and Demonstration. Your child will be competing as a soloists or team member against others at the same grade levels (6-8th). They are judged according to a rubric specific for each category.

WHAT IS THE STUDENT TIME COMMITMENT?
Practices are held at school on TBD during the months of December & January immediately after school. The competitions begin February 6th and will happen on a Friday, Sat, or Sunday continuing thru March. Keep in mind that the Friday meets may require that students depart early from school to arrive at tournaments on time. The Friday tournaments are often a student favorite as there is a dance party while you wait for results.

As a team we will have 5 tournaments to participate in. Students may attend as many competitions as they would like to enter, however students wishing to proceed on to State competitions must either:
1) attain an average of 37 out of 42 possible points in 3 tournaments OR
2) earn a sum of 111 points when totaling the average score of the top 3 separate tournaments to qualify.

WHAT IS THE PARENT INVOLVEMENT EXPECTATION?
  • Pick up from school meetings weekly: TBD
  • Transportation for your student to tournaments
  • One parent for each student is required to attend parent meeting & judges training
TBD  at the SJS Activity Center (Unless previously attended training)
  • One parent for each student is required to judge at least 50% of the events their student attends- this frequency will be determined after we select meets they are signing up for. We are required to supply 1 judge for each 5 attendees at an event which is an average of 3-5 judges (you may also find another parent that can take your shift)
  • Sign up for a time each for snacks & drinks for Monday meetings & Friday meets. Kids are heading straight from school & are hungry-help them perform at their best!
  • Financial commitment noted below
  • Help supervise & encourage your student to practice their piece at home 1x/wk

WHAT IS THE FINANCIAL COMMITMENT?
Families are responsible for entry fees for tournament fees, forensics t-shirt, & NJFL individual registration-final amounts will be sent with registration packet. These fees are per student.
Students may pack a lunch/dinner to bring with them or bring money to purchase dinner
